Sussex Homeowner Resources

Garbage, recycling, and yard waste Collection

Sussex curbside garbage and recycling service is provided through the Village's contract with GFL Solid Waste Midwest, LLC. Use the disclosures below for collection schedules, set-out rules, accepted materials, and yard waste program details.

Garbage collection

Weekly · Curbside by 7 AM · 262-246-5200

Sussex curbside trash service for one- to four-family residences is provided through the Village’s contract with GFL Solid Waste Midwest, LLC (GFL). Trash is collected weekly, based on your address and collection zone.

When to set carts out

  • Have your trash cart curbside by 7:00 AM on your collection day.
  • Route timing can vary — don’t rely on “later in the morning.”

Confirm your collection day

  • Collection days are based on zone boundaries. Some streets — the Village calls out Good Hope Road, Main Street, and Maple Avenue as examples — have different collection days depending on which side of the street you live on.
  • Use the official maps and collection day resource to confirm your exact day.

Cart setup and placement

  • GFL provides one 96-gallon trash cart per eligible household under the Village contract.
  • Place carts 3 feet apart and 3 feet from obstructions so the driver can safely service them.
  • Keep carts out of the roadway, especially during leaf collection and snow season.
  • All trash must be inside the cart — trash left outside the cart will not be collected.

Holiday delays

  • When a holiday falls on a weekday, collection is delayed by one day.
  • GFL observes: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

What belongs in the trash cart

  • Typical household trash and garbage.
  • Not accepted: recyclables, household hazardous waste, liquid latex paint, yard waste, appliances, or electronics — these have separate rules and programs.

Bulk items

  • Up to 10 bulk items per month per household on the designated bulk pickup time.
  • Items must be manageable by one person.
  • Must be scheduled 48 hours in advance.
  • Not accepted in bulk pickup: liquids, batteries, and e-waste.

Recycling collection

Weekly · Single stream · 262-246-5200

Sussex curbside recycling for one- to four-family residences is also provided through the Village’s contract with GFL. Recycling is collected weekly, based on your address and collection day.

When to set carts out

  • Have your recycling cart curbside by 7:00 AM on your collection day.
  • Pickup starts at 7:00 AM and route timing can vary — don’t set out late.

Recycling cart

  • GFL provides one 96-gallon recycling cart for each eligible household under the Village contract.
  • If your cart is damaged or broken, contact GFL for replacement or service.

Cart placement

  • Place carts 3 feet apart and 3 feet away from obstructions — a good rule is that someone should be able to walk between carts.
  • Keep carts out of the road, especially during snow season and seasonal collection operations.
  • All recycling must be inside the cart — material left outside the cart will not be collected.

Single stream — no sorting required

Sussex is single stream: put all accepted recyclables together in the cart. You do not need to separate paper from containers.

Accepted recyclables

  • Aluminum containers
  • Glass containers
  • Steel, tin, and bi-metal containers
  • Corrugated cardboard, cut down to pieces no larger than 3 feet by 3 feet
  • Magazines and similar paper products
  • Newspaper and other newsprint
  • Mixed paper
  • Plastic containers #1 through #7 (milk jugs, detergent bottles, soda and water bottles, and similar items)

Holiday delays

  • If a holiday falls on a weekday, collection is delayed by one day.
  • GFL observes: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Yard waste & seasonal pickups

Site open Apr–Nov · Leaf & brush programs are seasonal

The Village defines yard waste as organic material generated from routine yard and landscape maintenance — leaves, grass clippings, garden debris, weeds, and small branches from normal residential upkeep. Yard waste is not collected with regular garbage and is handled through a combination of seasonal curbside programs and the Village drop-off site.

Leaves and grass clippings

  • Typically handled through seasonal collection programs.
  • Material must be loose or properly prepared — plastic bags are not accepted for leaf collection.
  • Collection methods and timing change during fall cleanup, so check current seasonal notices.

Brush and woody debris

  • Brush must be cut to manageable lengths and bundled according to Village guidelines.
  • Oversized brush, root balls, and stumps are not part of routine yard waste collection.
  • Improperly prepared brush may be left behind.

Set-out and placement rules

  • Yard waste should be placed curbside, not in the street.
  • Keep material clear of mailboxes, fire hydrants, and parked vehicles.
  • Do not mix yard waste with garbage or recycling carts.
  • Improperly prepared piles are a common reason for non-collection.

Yard waste site — location, season & hours

  • Location: Woodland Nature Preserve, N72W22924 Good Hope Road, Sussex
  • Season: First Saturday in April through the Saturday before Thanksgiving (closes at 4 PM)
  • Saturdays (April–mid November): 9 AM–4 PM
  • Mondays (May–August): 4–7 PM
  • Mondays (September–October): 3–6 PM

Site access — pass or punch card

  • Punch card: $10, five punches per card, one punch per 30-gallon bag or bundle (buy at the Civic Center or Pauline Haass Library).
  • Annual pass: $30, best for loose loads in a trailer or pickup — pass holders do not need to bag material.

Seasonal timing

Yard waste programs are seasonal, especially leaf collection. Start and end dates vary each year based on weather and volume — check Village notices for current schedules rather than assuming year-to-year consistency.

Permits and home improvement guidelines

The Village of Sussex requires permits for many home improvement, repair, and construction projects to ensure work meets local building codes, zoning rules, and safety standards. If your project involves structural changes, exterior alterations, or trades like electrical, plumbing, or HVAC, confirm permit requirements early — it's the best way to avoid delays, added fees, or required removal of unpermitted work.

Does my project need a permit?

Check before you start · Apply via the online permit portal

Permits protect homeowners by confirming inspections are completed and that improvements are documented for future property sales or refinancing.

Common projects that typically require a permit

  • Structural repairs or alterations
  • Decks, porches, and stairs
  • Interior remodeling that affects walls, plumbing, electrical, or HVAC systems
  • Window and door replacements
  • Roofing and siding replacement
  • Basement finishing
  • Fences, sheds, and accessory structures
  • Driveways, patios, and other hardscape improvements
  • Mechanical systems, including furnaces, air conditioning, and water heaters

If you’re unsure whether a permit is required, the Village advises checking before work begins — unpermitted work can result in delays, additional fees, or required removal.

Contractors and homeowner responsibility

Even when hiring a contractor, Sussex places responsibility on the property owner to ensure permits are obtained. Confirm permits are issued and inspections completed as required.

Zoning, plan prep & inspections

Setbacks, applications & staged inspections

Beyond building permits, Sussex enforces zoning regulations that affect how and where improvements can be built. Homeowners are expected to confirm zoning compliance as part of the planning process.

Zoning rules to review before starting a project

  • Setbacks from property lines
  • Lot coverage limits
  • Building height restrictions
  • Location of accessory structures
  • Fence height and placement
  • Driveway and hardscape layout

Permit application process

  • Applications are submitted to the Village of Sussex Building Inspection Department.
  • Applications may require plans, drawings, or specifications depending on project scope.
  • Fees vary by permit type and project size.
  • Most permitted work requires inspections at specific stages before completion. Work should not begin until the permit is approved.

Special conditions

Certain properties or project types may have additional review requirements. Contact staff early if a project involves unusual site conditions, drainage changes, or significant exterior modifications.
