Butler’s curbside garbage service is provided by Johns Disposal, with automated cart pickup. Garbage is collected every Monday, and residents should use the annual collection calendar to confirm holiday delays.
Collection day and set out time
Garbage collection day is Monday
Set your cart out the night before, or by 6:00 AM on collection day
Which cart is garbage
The brown cart is the garbage cart, the green cart is recycling (lids are labeled)
Cart placement, so the automated arm can grab it
Place carts at the end of your driveway, or in the grass between the sidewalk and the road, next to your driveway
Keep carts within 2 feet of the street
Keep carts at least 6 feet away from vehicles, mailboxes, poles, or other carts and objects
Extra bags and overflow, what to do
Extra bags next to the cart are not collected, all material must fit inside the cart due to the automated pickup system
If you have extra, hold it for the next pickup, or confirm if a neighbor has room in their cart
Bulk and large items
Bulk items are picked up for a fee, you must schedule directly with Johns Disposal
If a car blocks your cart
The driver may move the cart to access it with the automated arm, but the best approach is to place your cart where it is least likely to be blocked
Snow and winter placement
If snowbanks block your usual spot, shovel a small area on either side of your driveway in the grass between the curb and street, so the cart stays level and accessible
Missed pickup
Report missed collection the same day if possible, you can contact either:

Recycling Collection
Butler recycling service is provided by Johns Disposal and is collected every other Monday. Using the correct prep rules matters because contamination, bagged recycling, and food or liquid left in containers are the most common reasons loads get rejected.

Single stream recycling, what that means
Butler uses single stream recycling, you can mix approved recyclable materials together in the green cart, no sorting by type required
Cart placement, so pickup does not get missed
Place the cart within 2 feet of the road
Keep about 6 feet of clearance from vehicles, mailboxes, poles, and other objects
Johns Disposal requests these orientation details for automated pickup
Arrows on the lid should point toward the road

Place your garbage cart on one side of the driveway, and the recycling cart on the other side of the driveway

Yard Waste Collection
Butler handles yard debris through three different systems: Village brush pickup dates, Village leaf vacuum collection in fall, and an optional paid yard waste subscription through Johns Disposal. Following the set-out rules matters because items that are prepped incorrectly can be skipped.
1) Brush pickup, Village service (spring through mid-fall)
Butler offers regular brush pickup starting in April.
Pickup days: the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month, April through mid-October, weather dependent
Set out the window: have the brush at the curb by 7:00 AM on pickup day, but no sooner than 6:00 PM Sunday night before pickup
Placement: stack neatly at the curb, not in the street
Size limit: branches must be no greater than 4 inches in diameter
Brush only: no full trees
No containers: do not place brush in garbage cans or bags
No mixing: do not put other yard waste in with the brush
If these rules are not followed, the Village notes your brush may not be picked up.
2) Leaf collection, Village fall vacuum service (no bags)
Leaf collection starts in October and runs through the end of November, weather dependent.
How it works: rake leaves into the street at the curb, DPW vacuums them up periodically
No set schedule: the Village does not publish a fixed route calendar, and leaves are generally collected within about a week
Do not bag leaves: bagged leaves will not be vacuumed up
Do not hide the brush in leaves: do not put branches under the leaf pile
3) Yard waste, optional paid subscription through Johns Disposal (not a Village program)
Butler does not provide regular weekly yard waste collection. If you want weekly yard waste pickup, Johns Disposal offers a paid subscription program.
Service window, April 1 through November 31
Weekly limit: Yard waste may not exceed 2 bags or containers per week per home
How to enroll: contact Johns Disposal to set up service and confirm pricing
Phone: 262-473-4700
Seasonal reminder, Christmas trees
Place Christmas trees at the curb; do not bag them
DPW collects trees during the first and third weeks of January each year
Permits and Home
Improvement Guidelines
Butler’s building inspection services are handled through SAFEbuilt, and the Village provides permit forms, fee schedules, online submission instructions, and inspection scheduling details on its official permit pages. If your project involves structural changes, exterior work, or trade work like electrical, plumbing, or HVAC, confirm permit requirements early so your timeline does not get slowed down by plan review or inspection scheduling.

Butler posts permit and application forms in its official Document Center under “Building Department Permits and Applications”
Butler uses the Uniform Permit Application for Building, HVAC, Electrical, and Plumbing permits
Use the Village Fee Schedule to confirm current permit fees, minimum fees, and potential re inspection fees before you submit
Online permitting, what Butler requires
Butler is transitioning to online permitting and payment through Community Core
Before you can submit online, you must register as a user in the system
Everyone must complete, sign, date, and upload a copy of the paper application to the online portal
Contractors should ensure their contractor license number is current in the submission

Seasonal Services
and City Notices
Butler service schedules and local rules can shift seasonally, especially during winter weather, leaf season, and holiday weeks. Use the official Village channels below to confirm timing, parking restrictions, and any notices that could impact your project schedule.
Winter parking and snow related notices
No street or municipal lot parking overnight: Butler’s Police Department enforces no parking on Village streets or municipal parking lots between 3:00 AM and 6:00 AM. If you need an exception, you must request permission through the Village’s overnight parking request process.
Alternate side parking rules: Butler enforces alternate side parking, and it is especially important to follow during winter months so plows and emergency vehicles can get through.
Snow emergencies: When a snow emergency is declared, parking rules can tighten quickly, so check official updates before leaving vehicles on the street overnight.
Holiday weeks and special service updates
Holiday weeks can impact public works timing and vendor schedules, and the Village often posts updates through its news, calendar, and newsletters.
For anything time sensitive, like a move, dumpster delivery, or contractor staging, confirm restrictions and closures a few days ahead.
Seasonal yard rules and curbside expectations
Leaf season and brush season bring the most temporary changes, especially around what can be placed at the curb and when. If you are planning outdoor work, landscaping, or cleanup, it helps to confirm current seasonal guidance and avoid setting materials out too early.
Road closures, events, and neighborhood access
Community events, parades, and public works activity can affect street access, parking availability, and delivery timing. If your project involves deliveries, street parking, or trailer placement, check the Village calendar close to your target date.
How to stay updated, without digging
Use the Village Calendar for upcoming events and timing.
Use Public Notices for official meeting notices, hearings, bids, and posted notices.
Use Recent Newsletters for ongoing community updates and seasonal reminders.
