Garbage, recycling, and
yard waste collection

Garbage Collection

Menomonee Falls residential garbage collection is provided through the Village’s contracted hauler, Waste Management. Use the route map and placement rules below to avoid missed pickups and delays.

Pickup day and set out time

  • Set your garbage cart at the roadside by 5:30 AM on your scheduled day

  • Garbage pickup is weekly on the same day each week for your address

How to confirm your pickup day

  • Use the official route map to confirm your weekly pickup day

  • If your street shows multiple colors, your pickup day depends on your side of the street, use the color on your side

What will be collected

  • Garbage must be in the Waste Management provided garbage cart

  • Extra bags or containers not provided by Waste Management are not collected, they may be left and tagged

  • No loose trash will be collected

Cart placement for reliable pickup
To avoid a missed pickup, follow the Village cart placement standards:

  • Place the cart at the curb, alley, or shoulder

  • Put the cart out with the lid opening facing the street, keep the lid closed

  • Leave 3 feet of space from other carts, parked cars, mailboxes, and obstacles

  • Do not place items next to the cart, pickup is automated and items beside the cart will not be collected

Holiday delays
Waste Management does not collect on these holidays:

  • New Year’s Day

  • Memorial Day

  • Independence Day (July 4)

  • Labor Day

  • Thanksgiving Day

  • Christmas Day

If one of these holidays falls on a weekday, collection is delayed one day for the rest of that week. If the holiday is on a Saturday or Sunday, there is no delay.

Missed pickup, how to report it

  • Missed pickup reporting is done through Waste Management

  • The Village notes that the missed pickup reporting option appears after 6:00 PM on your service day under the “Next Pickup” area, and remains available for 72 hours

  • Missed pickups cannot be scheduled if your cart was not out or was blocked at the time of service

Waste Management support options

Bulk items that do not fit in the cart

Menomonee Falls recycling is collected by the Village’s contracted hauler on the same weekday as your garbage pickup, but every other week. Your address is assigned to Week 1 (Red) or Week 2 (Blue), and the official calendar tells you which weeks are collected.

Pickup week and set out time

  • Set your recycling cart out by 5:30 AM on your pickup day

  • Recycling is collected every other week, based on your assigned week color

  • Your pickup day is typically the same weekday as garbage, just not every week

How to confirm your recycling week and schedule

  1. Check the official recycling routes map and confirm whether you are Red (Week 1) or Blue (Week 2)

  2. Use the official recycling calendar to confirm which dates are collected for your color

Cart placement, to avoid missed pickups

Recycling is serviced with automated equipment, placement matters.

  • Place the cart at the curb, alley, or roadside shoulder where your neighborhood normally sets carts

  • Set the cart so the lid opening faces the street

  • Keep the lid fully closed, do not overload so the lid cannot shut

  • Leave about 3 feet of space from other carts, parked cars, mailboxes, and obstacles

  • Do not place extra items next to the cart, items beside the cart are typically not collected

What to recycle, what to keep out

Keep recycling clean and loose in the cart, contaminated loads are a common reason for problems.

  • Commonly accepted: cardboard and paper, paperboard, metal cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and containers

  • Keep out: food and liquids, plastic bags and film, foam items, clothing and textiles, batteries, hazardous waste, yard waste

Holiday delays

Missed pickup, how to report it

  • Missed pickup reporting is handled by Waste Management

  • The Village notes the missed pickup option appears after 6:00 PM on your service day and remains available for a limited time window

  • Missed pickup requests may not be accepted if the cart was not out on time or was blocked

Recycling Collection

Menomonee Falls has three different systems that homeowners commonly mix up, year round yard waste drop off, spring brush pickup, and fall leaf collection. Use the right option below so you avoid missed pickup, fines, or extra fees.

Yard waste disposal, year round drop off

If you have grass clippings, garden debris, leaves, and most general yard waste, Menomonee Falls residents use the Orchard Ridge drop off program.

  • The drop off facility is open to residents year round

  • Yard waste such as grass clippings, leaves, and tree branches cannot be put in the trash under state rules, plan on drop off or approved programs instead

  • You can use the Village yard waste permit to get up to 35 drop offs per season at no fee, the season runs April through December

  • One visit per day, the attendant marks your permit each time

  • After 35 visits, you pay the posted per pound rate with a minimum load charge

  • If you do not have your permit, you can still drop off, but you will be charged

  • Payment is credit card only, cash is not accepted

  • Proof of residency is required for permit replacement or free disposal

Important if you hire a contractor

  • If you hire a contractor to haul away yard waste, they cannot use your free resident permit

  • Contractors are required to pay the yard waste business fee, so plan for that when comparing cleanup options

Spring brush pickup, one annual curbside pickup

Brush pickup is separate from yard waste disposal and it is limited to the Village’s scheduled program.

  • Brush must be out by the second Sunday in May, then crews start collecting the following Monday and move through the Village one time

  • Accepted brush only, branches up to 6 inches in diameter, cut to 4 foot lengths

  • Place brush on the terrace area between the curb and sidewalk, or along the edge of the street in areas without curb, keep it parallel to the road

  • Do not place brush in the street, for safety it will not be collected

  • Not accepted, yard waste, leaves, grass clippings, garden debris, stumps, roots, shrubs with root balls, brush in containers

  • Brush put out after the deadline is not picked up, plan ahead for trimming projects

Fall leaf collection, leaves only

Leaf collection is designed to protect storm sewers and is not the same as brush or yard waste pickup.

  • Runs seasonally, typically October through late November

  • Provided on streets with concrete curb and gutter storm sewer systems

  • Leaves only, no brush, no yard waste, no debris mixed into piles

  • If the Village finds brush or debris mixed into leaf piles, you may be given notice to remove it within 72 hours

  • Failure to correct can be treated as a municipal code issue and may result in a fine

  • The Village typically posts a daily progress map during the leaf collection season so residents can track when crews are in their area
