Garbage, recycling, and yard waste Collection

The City of Pewaukee contracts with Johns Disposal for garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection. Use the disclosures below for schedules, set-out rules, accepted materials, and contacts.

Garbage collection

Weekly · Out by 6 AM · 262-473-4700

Garbage is collected weekly by Johns Disposal. Put your cart out the night before your collection day, or by 6:00 AM the morning of pickup.

Which day is mine?

  • Pewaukee's schedule is split by area, with routes tied to east vs. west of Highway 164.
  • Check the current schedule online, or contact the Clerk/Treasurer's Office if you're unsure which side applies to your address.

Cart placement

  • Arrows on the lid should point toward the road; handles and wheels face away from the road.
  • Place the garbage cart within about 2 feet of the road on one side of the driveway (the recycle cart goes on the other side).
  • Keep about 6 feet of clearance between carts and other objects, especially mailboxes, poles, and vehicles.

What belongs in the garbage cart

  • Household garbage only.
  • Do not place recyclables, brush/leaves, construction or demolition materials, electronics, or hazardous materials in the cart.

Holiday delays

  • If your collection day falls on a major holiday, that day's collection — and the rest of the week's collections — shift by one day; Friday collection moves to Saturday.
  • The City posts holiday-related delays as News Flash alerts; see the Seasonal & City Notices section below for how to subscribe.

Bulk items & missed pickup

  • Large items require a scheduled special pickup — call or email Johns Disposal. Up to one bulk collection per month, 12 per year.
  • Includes furniture, flattened cardboard, appliances (including those with freon), auto batteries, tires (2 per pickup/month, 8 per year max), sealed drain oil/antifreeze, and construction materials in 32-gallon-or-smaller containers under 50 lbs.
  • Yard waste, hazardous materials, and electronics are not accepted as bulk items. Electronics can be collected separately for a fee — call to schedule.
  • Missed pickup or a broken cart: call Johns Disposal at 262-473-4700. Office hours are Mon–Fri 8 AM–4:30 PM, Sat 8 AM–noon.

Recycling collection

Weekly · Single stream, loose in cart · 262-473-4700

Recycling is collected weekly. Johns Disposal runs single-stream recycling, so all recyclable material can be mixed together in the cart — it's sorted at their facility.

Set-out & cart placement

  • Automated curbside collection can begin as early as 6:00 AM — set your cart out the night before to be safe.
  • Same placement rules as garbage: arrows point to the road, handles/wheels face away, cart within 2 feet of the road, 6 feet clearance from mailboxes, poles, and vehicles.
  • If you subscribe to Up the Drive service (additional charge), that collection starts at 7:00 AM; you'll receive a blue 32-gallon recycling can and use your own cans/bags for garbage.

Accepted in the recycle cart

  • Paper & cardboard: flattened cardboard, magazines, catalogs, phone books, cereal/cracker boxes, office paper, envelopes/junk mail, newspapers, paper grocery bags, pizza boxes (no food or grease), paper egg cartons, gift wrap (no foil), paper cups (no plastic lids/straws).
  • Cartons: paper milk and juice cartons, empty.
  • Shredded paper: sealed in a clear/transparent plastic bag, no larger than a basketball.
  • Plastic: bottles and containers numbered #1, #2, and #5 (including #1 clamshells) — empty and rinse.
  • Metal & glass: aluminum and steel/tin cans, empty aerosol cans, glass bottles and jars (any color), metal pots and pans, small metal appliances (nothing larger than a basketball), small metal plumbing fixtures.

Not accepted curbside

  • Glassware, ceramics, mirrors, and window glass
  • Motor oil and gasoline containers

Permits and home improvement guidelines

Permits, plan review, and inspections for the City of Pewaukee are handled by the City's Building Services Department. Confirming what's required before you start — and before you schedule inspections — is the best way to avoid rework, plan-review delays, or added fees.

Does my project need a permit?

Building, electrical, plumbing, HVAC & zoning permits · Apply via BS&A

Pewaukee issues separate permits by type of work, so remodels often need more than one.

Confirm you're in the City first

  • The City of Pewaukee is a separate municipality from the neighboring Village of Pewaukee. If you're not sure which one your address falls in, verify using the Waukesha County property search before submitting anything.

Common permit types

  • Building: additions, remodels, decks, sheds, reroofs, residing, pools, and similar work.
  • Electrical: new services, rewiring, and remodel electrical changes.
  • Plumbing: remodel plumbing changes and equipment installs.
  • HVAC: furnace and HVAC changes tied to remodels or replacements.
  • Zoning: driveways, fences, patios, and smaller accessory buildings. Accessory buildings of 120 sq ft or less may only need a zoning permit; larger structures typically require a building permit.

Contractor licensing

  • Wisconsin state licensing is required for contractors pulling permits; the City does not require an additional local license.
  • Homeowners who occupy their single-family home may be able to obtain certain permits without a license — confirm your situation with Building Services before applying.

Applying, fees & inspections

Up to 10 business days to process · 48 hrs notice for inspections

How to apply

  • Email: submit your application by email; call if you don't get confirmation within 2 business days.
  • Mail or in-person drop-off: useful for printed plans or larger project packets.
  • Online (BS&A portal): first-time users create an account and get a City PIN by calling Building Services.

Processing & timeline

  • Processing can take up to 10 business days once all required information is received.
  • For remodels and additions needing multiple permit types, all permits should be issued (and paid) before inspections are scheduled.

Fees & payment

  • Once your permit is processed, the City will contact you with the fee amount and permit number.
  • Pay by cash, card, or check payable to the City of Pewaukee, or through the online payment service.
  • Do not start work before the permit is issued — work started without a permit can result in additional fees, including double or triple the standard fee.

Scheduling inspections

  • Inspections are scheduled by phone through Building Services — have your permit number ready.
  • Give at least 48 hours notice.
  • Inspections cannot be scheduled via voicemail or email.

Seasonal Services and City Notices

Seasonal rules and service changes in Pewaukee can affect parking, access, and project timing — especially in winter. The disclosures below cover winter parking, road closures and construction, and holiday-related collection changes.

Snow operations & winter parking

No street parking Nov 1–Mar 31

Winter parking restriction

  • The City prohibits parking on any City street from November 1 through March 31.
  • This affects contractor staging, early-morning arrivals, and delivery trucks — plan for driveway or off-street parking ahead of any winter project.

Snow removal rules

  • Residents and contractors may not shovel, push, or blow snow into the street — it's a hazard and is prohibited. Make sure any snow contractor you hire knows this.
  • Keep fire hydrants clear of snow so emergency access isn't delayed.

Plowing & mailboxes

  • Pavement edges can be hard to see during plowing; shoulder damage is typically addressed in spring once conditions allow.
  • Check mailbox condition before winter — damaged or poorly supported mailboxes are more likely to fail during plow season. Report damage to the City so it's logged for spring repair or review.

  • Johns Disposal also publishes its holiday collection calendar directly.
