Garbage, recycling, and yard waste Collection

Oak Creek's garbage and recycling are collected by GFL Environmental. Use the disclosures below for collection schedules, cart placement rules, accepted materials, and yard waste programs.

Garbage collection

Weekly · GFL Environmental · 262-679-0860

GFL Environmental (formerly Advanced Disposal) collects garbage for the City of Oak Creek. Use the City's Address Lookup Tool to confirm your route and next pickup day.

What goes in the garbage cart

  • Mixed trash
  • Ceramics
  • Bagged garbage and food waste
  • Styrofoam
  • Other loose trash

All garbage must be placed inside the City-issued cart. Garbage left outside the cart will not be collected.

Holiday delays

  • When a holiday falls during the regular Monday–Thursday collection days, pickup shifts one day later than normal for that week only. The regular schedule resumes the following week.

Cart placement

  • Place carts on opposite corners of your driveway approach, with the lid arrows pointing toward the street.
  • Do not place the garbage cart on the same side of your approach as your mailbox.
  • Keep the cart at least 5 feet from any vertical obstruction, including the recycling cart.
  • Leave a 15-foot minimum clearance around parked vehicles.
  • If placement isn’t practical as directed, use your best judgment — the collector may leave a red tag with specific instructions if your carts need to be relocated.

New construction & cart issues

  • Carts for newly constructed homes: call Oak Creek Public Works at 414-768-6552.
  • Collection issues, additional carts, replacement carts, or repairs: contact GFL Environmental at 262-679-0860.

Bulky items and special pickups

Eligible residents can arrange a special pickup through Public Works Cleanup Services, which outlines timing, prep rules, payment requirements, and items that will not be picked up.

Recycling collection

Every other week · Loose in cart · 262-679-0860

Recycling is collected bi-weekly by GFL Environmental. Use the City's Address Lookup Tool to confirm your recycling week and next pickup day.

Holiday delays

  • Same rule as garbage: a holiday during the Monday–Thursday collection days pushes pickup one day later for that week only, then the schedule resumes as normal.

Cart requirements

  • All recycling must be inside the City-issued recycling cart — recycling left outside the cart will not be collected.
  • Do not put recycling in plastic bags.

Cart placement

  • Place carts on opposite corners of your driveway approach, arrows on the lid pointing toward the street.
  • Keep the garbage cart off the mailbox side, and keep at least 5 feet between carts and other vertical obstructions.
  • Leave 15 feet of clearance around parked vehicles.
  • If you can’t place carts exactly as shown in the City’s diagram, use your best judgment — a red tag with instructions may be left if changes are needed.

What goes in the recycling cart

Mixed containers: aluminum cans and clean aluminum foil; tin, steel, and aerosol cans, and empty/dried paint cans; glass bottles and jars; plastics #1–#7; milk cartons, juice boxes, soup cartons.

Mixed paper: newspaper, magazines, books, mail, school/office paper; brown corrugated cardboard; gray chipboard (cereal and shoe boxes); brown paper bags.

Not accepted in the recycling cart

Yard waste & seasonal pickups

Brush 4x/year · Leaves & grass not curbside · 414-768-6552

Oak Creek does not collect grass clippings or leaves curbside. Most yard waste goes through the City Recycling Yard or one of the seasonal branch pickups below.

Grass clippings

  • Not accepted curbside. Compost at home or mulch clippings back into the lawn.

Leaves

  • Not picked up curbside, and may not be placed in streets, alleys, or sidewalk areas.
  • Take leaves to the City Recycling Yard during normal hours.

Branches & brush — seasonal curbside pickup

  • Public Works runs four branch pickups a year, beginning May 1, July 1, September 1, and November 1. If the start date falls on a weekend, pickup begins the following Monday.
  • To be guaranteed pickup, stack branches at the curb or roadside before the start date, but no earlier than two weeks ahead.
  • Stack neatly with cut ends toward the street, and keep root balls separate from the brush pile.
  • Not accepted: branches from lot clearing or from a contractor’s work on your property — plan on private hauling or the Recycling Yard (if eligible) instead.

Christmas trees

  • Public Works collects real Christmas trees curbside throughout January. Artificial trees are not included.

Recycling Yard

  • Location: 720 W Puetz Rd, Oak Creek. Phone: 414-768-6552.
  • Standard hours: Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, 8:00 AM–3:00 PM.

  • The yard may close in snow or bad weather — call ahead to confirm access.
  • Open to owner-occupants of residences with an individual City of Oak Creek property tax bill. No contractor vehicles allowed. Manufactured home park occupants with private garbage pickup may use the yard for yard waste and shredding only.

Permits and home improvement guidelines

Oak Creek handles permits through its Licenses & Permits center and Community Development Department. A building permit is generally required for renovation or remodeling work on an existing residence, so it's worth confirming requirements before you start — especially for decks, fences, sheds, garages, and egress windows.

Does my project need a permit?

Building permit required for most remodels · Apply via Licenses & Permits center

Oak Creek states a building permit is required for renovation or remodeling work to an existing residence, with limited exceptions noted on the City’s residential alteration permit page. If your project changes structure, safety, or regulated systems, confirm permitting before starting.

Homeowner-pulled permits

  • Homeowners who want to pull their own permits must physically reside at the address where the work will be completed. If you’re hiring a contractor, confirm who is pulling the permit and that it’s filed correctly before work begins.

Where to start

  • Oak Creek organizes most homeowner permit guidance through its Licenses and Permits center, with dedicated pages for remodels, decks, fences, sheds/garages, plumbing, and egress windows.

Decks & fences

Setbacks & size limits apply · Zoning-dependent

Oak Creek publishes specific zoning and placement rules for decks and fences. Check your zoning district before finalizing plans, since setbacks depend on it.

Decks

  • Decks may not be built in any easement.
  • Attached decks must meet the same setback requirements as the principal structure.
  • Freestanding decks must meet side setbacks, sit behind the front elevation of the home, and be at least 5 feet from the rear property line.

Fences

  • Permitted in side and rear yards of residential districts; prohibited in front yards.
  • May not be located closer than 2 feet to any alley right-of-way line.
  • Corner lot fences must comply with the City’s traffic visibility rules.
