Garbage collection
Garbage is collected weekly through the City’s Public Works Refuse & Recycling program, collected by GFL Environmental. Your exact pickup day depends on your address — confirm it with the City’s address-based lookup tool or the collection map and calendar.
Set-out & placement
- Have your cart at the curb no later than 7:00 AM on your scheduled day — setting it out the night before is the safest way to avoid a missed pickup.
- Place the cart with wheels facing your house and the lid opening toward the street.
- Keep carts about 4 feet apart and at least 4 feet away from obstacles like parked cars, mailboxes, utility poles, and snowbanks.
- Leave the cart at the curb until the end of the day — truck arrival time can shift.
- Keep lids closed when possible; it’s acceptable for the lid to be propped open if the cart is full.
What can go in the cart
- General household trash, small furniture, small auto parts (mufflers, etc.), minor construction debris, and non-recyclable plastic or foam materials.
What should not go in the cart
- Large furniture and large appliances (washers, dryers, refrigerators) — call GFL to schedule pickup.
- Tires, tire only with no rims, limited to one per week per household — call GFL to schedule pickup.
- Christmas trees — place at the roadside; the City posts collection dates separately.
- Bulk yard waste — small amounts commingled with normal household trash are acceptable, but larger amounts should follow the City’s yard waste process instead.
- Recyclables — the hauler can refuse a cart that contains large amounts of recyclable material.
- Hazardous or automotive waste, motor oil, and automobile batteries.
- Large quantities of stone, concrete, rubble, earth, or sod, and large auto parts (engine blocks, heads, fenders).

- Items that don’t fit in the cart: call GFL Environmental to schedule a bulk trash collection date.

Yard waste & seasonal pickups
Muskego handles yard waste two ways: a fall curbside leaf collection program, and two year-round yard waste drop-off sites for leaves, brush, and landscaping debris.
Fall leaf collection
- The City’s Public Works Department begins leaf collection on October 20, 2025, weather permitting.
- Rake leaves to the roadside as soon as possible — an early snowfall can disrupt the program.
- Place leaves immediately behind the curb; if you have no curb, place them on the edge of the blacktop road, not in the ditch.
- Leaves should not be bagged, and no branches, garden plants, or vines may be mixed in with them.
- There is no spring leaf collection — property owners are responsible for disposal after the City’s collection is complete.
Yard waste drop-off sites
- GFL Emerald Park Landfill — W124 S10629 S. 124th Street. Fridays 9:00 AM–4:00 PM, Saturdays 8:00 AM–Noon. Phone 414-529-1360. Accepts yard waste, trash, tires (4 max), scrap metal, and electronics (2 per household); limited to one load per week, 1.5-yard max (about one leveled pickup truck bed) for materials other than yard waste — yard waste itself has no load limit at this site. Closed holidays.
- GFL Drop-Off Site — W144 S6350 College Court. Saturdays 7:00 AM–Noon. Phone 262-679-0860. Yard waste only: leaves, tree limbs or branches up to 4 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length, and brush or vegetative matter from routine landscaping. Pull in and place yard waste into the available containers. Closed holidays.
Which option to use
- Loose leaves only: use the fall curbside program and follow the placement rules above.
- Brush, branches, or yard waste outside the curbside window: use one of the two drop-off sites, following the size limits for branches.

Muskego restricts overnight street parking during the winter months and can further restrict parking during a declared snow emergency.
Winter parking restrictions
- No parking on public streets or highways from 3:00–7:00 AM, December 1 through April 1, unless temporarily authorized by the Police Department.
- During a declared snow emergency, parking is prohibited on main streets, alleys, and public parking lots — and immediately after, until the streets are cleared.
