Garbage, recycling, and yard waste Collection
The City of Milwaukee handles garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection directly through DPW Sanitation Services. Use the disclosures below for collection schedules, set-out rules, accepted materials, and contacts.
Garbage collection
Garbage service is scheduled by address. Use the City’s schedule lookup to confirm your collection day, and recheck it if you move, if a season changes, or if you think your route shifted.
Set-out rules
- Carts must be at the collection point — alley line or curb line, depending on how your property is serviced — by 7:00 AM on your pickup day. Setting out later can mean a missed pickup.
- Keep a clear path to the cart, especially in alleys, and keep it free of snow and ice so crews can safely reach it.
- Leave about 3 feet of clearance around the cart — away from other carts, vehicles, poles, and obstructions.
- Return carts to the storage area by 10:00 PM on collection day. Leaving carts out can result in a violation and fine.
What goes in the cart
- Bag household trash before placing it in the cart — this helps prevent litter and deters wildlife.
- Carts are City property. The City recommends writing your address on the cart to help prevent mix-ups, especially in tighter alleys.
Bulky items
- Up to 1 cubic yard (about the size of a recliner, or roughly two garbage carts) can go out at your regular collection point on your regular day — no online request or call needed.
- More than 1 cubic yard requires a special pickup request and a fee. Place the items at your collection point, then request the special pickup online or by phone.
Missed pickup or service issues
- Contact the City Call Center, or submit an online issue report through the City’s service request tool so it’s logged and routed correctly.

Recycling collection
Recycling collection is scheduled by address. Use the City’s schedule lookup to confirm your recycling day, and recheck if you recently moved, your route changed, or you’re unsure after a holiday week.
Set-out rules
- Carts must be at the collection point — alley line or curb line — by 7:00 AM on your scheduled day.
- Keep a clear path to the cart, keep it free of snow and ice, and leave about 3 feet of clearance from other objects.
- Return the cart to storage by 10:00 PM. Leaving carts out can result in a violation and fine.
How to prep recyclables
- Do not bag recyclables — place them loose in the cart. Do not put plastic bags or plastic film in the cart.
- Rinse food and beverage residue when possible to deter wildlife and reduce odors.
Accepted curbside (common items)
- Metal cans
- Glass bottles and jars
- Paper and cardboard
- Food and beverage cartons
For the full accepted-and-not-accepted list, use the City’s Recycling Directory and Curbside Recycling Guide, since they’re updated for local rules and materials markets.
Cart ownership
- Carts are City property. Writing your address on the cart helps prevent mix-ups in shared alleys or collection areas.

Yard waste & seasonal pickups
Yard waste — leaves, brush, weeds, and garden debris — is handled separately from garbage and recycling and should not go in your carts.
Brush and branches
- Brush collection can be requested April through November, for piles up to 2 cubic yards (about the size of a couch).
- Place brush between the curb and sidewalk, or at the alley line if alley-serviced — keep it out of the street.
- Cut branches to size: no longer than 4 feet or larger than 6 inches in diameter.
- Request a pickup online or call 414-286-2489.
- Piles larger than 2 cubic yards are not eligible for request pickup and must be taken to a Drop-Off Center. DPW Sanitation does not collect brush from apartment complexes of 5+ units or businesses.
Fall leaf collection
- The City runs a seasonal leaf collection program each fall. Check the official leaf program page for the current season’s dates and set-out guidance, including where to rake leaves and what to avoid so piles don’t block drainage or create roadway hazards.
Grass clippings
- Not collected curbside and should not be moved into the street.
- Options: leave clippings on the lawn (grass-cycle), compost, or take to a Drop-Off Center.
Garden debris and weeds
- Compost on site or take to a Drop-Off Center.
Drop-off centers (year-round option)
- Two locations: North (6660 N Industrial Rd) and South (3879 W Lincoln Ave).
- Photo ID is required — residents and City property owners are eligible; a tax bill or utility bill can help verify address if needed.
- Summer hours (Apr–Nov): Tue–Sun, 7 AM–3 PM. Winter hours (Dec–Mar): Tue–Sat, 7 AM–3 PM. Closed on major City holidays.
- Large box trucks and trailers (over 16 feet), dump trucks, flatbeds, and semis are not permitted. Fees apply above 1 cubic yard for most loads; brush under 6 cubic yards, recyclables, and scrap metal are free.

Permits and home improvement guidelines
Permits and inspections in Milwaukee are handled through the City of Milwaukee Department of Neighborhood Services (DNS). If your project involves exterior changes, structural work, or trades like electrical, plumbing, or HVAC, confirm permit requirements early — it's the best way to avoid rework, plan-review delays, or inspection rescheduling.
Does my project need a permit?
The fastest way to avoid guessing is Milwaukee’s official “Do I need a permit?” checklist. It lists common residential project types and whether a permit applies, and it points you to the correct phone number for that category if you still have questions.
DNS Development Center
- Address: 809 N Broadway, 1st Floor, Milwaukee, WI 53202
- Phone: 414-286-8210
- Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM. Wednesday: no plan-review appointments, but open 8:00 AM–4:30 PM for drop-off, pickup, and payment.
Apply online
- Milwaukee uses the Land Management System (LMS), built on Accela Citizen Access, for permit applications, document uploads, inspection scheduling, and payments.
- Online submittals are encouraged even if you plan to visit in person — it lets staff review and help you more efficiently.
- If you’re not sure what to bring, check the City’s info sheets or call the Development Center at 414-286-8210.

Plan prep, inspections & contractor licensing
What helps approvals go faster
- Have a clear scope description, exact address, and rough project dimensions ready, plus a basic sketch if applicable.
- If plans are required, upload drawings showing dimensions, materials, and how the work ties into existing construction.
- Know your contractor’s details if you’re hiring one, or confirm homeowner permit rules if you’re doing the work yourself.
Inspections
- Inspection requests are coordinated by section — use the DNS Inspection Services page to find the right section contact so inspections aren’t delayed by routing to the wrong team.
- Plan-review appointments at the Development Center can be booked through the City’s QLess online check-in system, or by calling 414-286-8210.
Contractor licensing
- DNS publishes licensing-related contacts by trade, including electrical and plumbing inspections, to help confirm the correct licensing channel before hiring.
- For home improvement contractor licensing questions specifically, DNS points residents to the City Clerk’s License Division.

Historic district properties
Milwaukee has a number of locally designated historic districts and individually designated historic properties. If your property is in one, exterior changes may require a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) through the Historic Preservation Commission before permits move forward.
This most commonly affects:
- Windows and doors
- Siding and masonry
- Porches and visible exterior alterations
- Some signage

Public right-of-way: dumpsters, sidewalks, driveways
Projects that touch the street, sidewalk, or alley can require separate approvals beyond the building permit.
Dumpsters in the public way
- Dumpsters placed on the street, sidewalk, or alley require a permit through the Permit and Development Center.
- The City publishes placement rules and seasonal restrictions — review them before scheduling delivery.
Sidewalk or driveway work in city right-of-way
- Driveway apron or sidewalk work in the city right-of-way requires a permit application through the Public Works form, which notes that a Sidewalk Builders License is required for that permit type.

Seasonal Services and City Notices
The disclosures below cover Milwaukee DPW's seasonal operations — snow response and winter parking, road work, street sweeping, and the annual Clean and Green program — useful when planning projects that depend on street access, deliveries, or staging.
Snow operations & winter parking
Snow and ice control status
- The City posts a live Snow and Ice Control Operations status page — the fastest way to confirm whether a snow emergency is active and which winter parking rules are in effect.
- During major storms, DPW may prioritize plowing and response work, which can affect garbage and recycling timing in some areas.
Winter parking rules
- Winter parking regulations can vary by street, so check the City’s winter regulations lookup for your address before a winter project or appointment — especially if you rely on street parking for access, staging, or deliveries.
- Sign up for E-Notify alerts to get faster notice of snow operations and parking changes.

Road closures, construction & city notices
- The City’s current projects page lists active and planned infrastructure work — useful for coordinating deliveries, planning staging, or avoiding detours near your address.
- For highway and statewide travel conditions, use 511 Wisconsin.
- For emergency and service alerts, or general news and public updates, check the City’s alert center and news page.
Quick links
Street & alley sweeping
- The City performs street and alley sweeping as conditions allow, including a post-winter heavy sweeping period that typically begins in late March and continues through April to clear winter buildup.
- This can affect where you can park and how you manage debris near the curb and alley edges during that season.

Holiday collection changes & Clean and Green
Holiday weeks
- Garbage and recycling schedules can shift after City holidays. Your address-based schedule lookup is the most accurate source, especially around major holidays.
- The City’s schedule tool supports email and text notifications tied to your address if you’d rather not check manually.
Project Clean and Green
- Milwaukee runs Project Clean and Green as an annual, city-wide spring cleanup program. During your zone’s assigned week, crews collect a larger volume of unwanted household items and yard debris on your regular garbage day, per that year’s posted zone schedule.

City services & service requests
If you’re not sure which City office handles something, Milwaukee’s main service line is 414-286-CITY (2489). It’s the City’s central entry point for non-emergency help and routing, and the best option when you need a live agent to check the status of an existing request.
Unified Call Center (UCC)
- Milwaukee’s online system for most non-emergency issues — potholes, abandoned vehicles, high weeds on vacant lots, curbside trash concerns, faulty traffic signals, and more.
- Submitting a request online assigns a tracking number — save it to follow progress or ask for a status update.
- To include the right details: give the exact address or nearest intersection, a clear description of the issue, relevant timing (when you noticed it, whether it’s recurring), and photos if you have them.
- MKE Mobile Action is the City’s mobile reporting option, useful for submitting a request with photos from your phone.
Building or property condition complaints
- For building-related problems that may require inspection, contact the Department of Neighborhood Services (DNS) complaint line, or enter a complaint online through the City’s Click4Action platform.
