Mequon Homeowner Resources
Garbage, recycling, and yard waste Collection
Mequon does not run its own trash or recycling routes — property owners contract directly with a City-licensed private hauler. Use the disclosures below to choose a hauler, confirm your service details, and find yard waste and Brush Site rules.
Garbage collection
The City of Mequon does not provide garbage collection. Property owners must contract privately with a City-licensed hauler for curbside garbage service — your pickup day, cart options, pricing, and service rules all depend on the hauler you choose.
Licensed haulers
- Waste Management — 262-251-4000
- Ozaukee Disposal — 262-377-4640
- GFL Environmental Inc — 262-679-0860
- State Disposal Services LLC — 414-489-1970
- Eagle Disposal Inc — 262-895-4800 (commercial properties only)
- Compost Crusader LLC — 262-394-6075
- Curby’s Compost Service — 414-445-4345
- Wisconsin Waste (National Waste Collection) — 608-630-2258
What to confirm with your hauler
- Your exact garbage pickup day
- Cart size options and pricing
- Set-out time and where carts must be placed — curb line, driveway edge, or alley
- Extra bag, bulky item, and appliance pickup availability, scheduling, and cost
- Whether construction debris is accepted, and any restrictions
- How missed pickups and holiday schedule delays are handled and communicated
Missed pickup
Keep your cart at the curb, then contact your hauler directly to report the missed pickup and confirm any service delay — the City does not dispatch pickups itself.

Recycling collection
Recycling is also handled through City-licensed private haulers — there is no single citywide recycling route, so your pickup day, cart type, and service rules depend on the provider you choose.
How to set up recycling service
- Confirm your provider is on the City’s licensed hauler list.
- Contact the hauler directly to start service for your address.
- Ask for your recycling pickup day, cart options, and how they handle service alerts and holiday delays.
What the City’s recycling guidance lists as commonly accepted curbside
- Containers: steel, aluminum, bi-metal, glass, and plastic #1 and #2
- Paper: corrugated cardboard, newspapers, magazines, office paper, junk mail
Confirm these details with your hauler
Rules vary by hauler — the City does not publish one single standard for all providers:
- Set-out time, when carts must be out
- Cart placement — curb line, alley, driveway edge, and clearance rules
- Sorting rules — single-stream vs. separated, and what stays out
- Holiday delays — how they notify you and whether pickup shifts
- Overflow policy — extra materials, extra fees, and how to schedule add-ons
Items that often need special handling
- Appliances and tires: may be picked up by your hauler by special arrangement, typically for an additional fee
- Electronics and specialty materials: often require a designated recycler or drop-off option

Yard waste & seasonal pickups
Mequon does not offer curbside yard waste pickup. Yard waste and brush go to the City’s Brush Site — a key-card-access site for permit holders — or to a private landscape contractor.
Brush Site basics
- Location: 6000 W Bonniwell Rd, Mequon, WI 53097
- Entry uses a key-card and an automated gate.
- Only brush and yard waste from a permit holder’s residential lot in the City of Mequon is accepted — no commercial dumping.
Getting a key-card
- Complete the Brush Site Permit Application online (it asks for your vehicle license plate information).
- Purchase the key-card in person at the City Hall Finance Counter or the DPW front counter — key-cards cannot be purchased at the Brush Site itself.
- First-year key-card fee is $40, with a $30 annual renewal. A lost or misplaced card can be replaced for $35.
- Pay by cash, check, or credit card (a processing fee applies to card payments) at City Hall or the DPW building.
Hours and season
The Brush Site is generally open Tuesday–Sunday (closed Mondays), 7:30 AM–7:00 PM, roughly April through December. Exact open/close dates and any mid-season closures shift from year to year, so confirm current dates on the City’s Brush Site page before you go.
What’s accepted
- Grass, leaves, non-invasive weeds, pumpkins, and garden waste
- Brush and branches up to 12 inches in diameter
- Soft-body green herbaceous material under 1 inch in diameter
- Log wood, wood chips, and compost material may be taken by permit holders for free when available — bring your driver’s license.
Grass clippings and invasive plants
Per the City’s Public Works FAQ: “Grass clippings, leaves, and similar yard waste cannot go to the landfill, so your refuse hauler cannot take them.” Residents can use a private landscape contractor or the Brush Site instead.
Invasive plants must be collected separately, placed in a clear bag labeled “Invasive Plants, Please Landfill,” and set out for collection by your contracted licensed garbage hauler.

Permits and home improvement guidelines
Mequon residential permitting follows Wisconsin DSPS One- and Two-Family Uniform Dwelling Code standards, so the process is built around plan review, permit issuance, and required inspections. If your project involves exterior changes, structural work, or trades like electrical, plumbing, or HVAC, confirm requirements early with Community Development to avoid rework or scheduling delays.
Does my project need a permit?
Permits are commonly required for work that changes structure, safety systems, or exterior elements — for example decks, sheds and accessory structures, additions, structural alterations, and electrical, plumbing, or HVAC work. If you’re not sure, the safest move is to confirm with Community Development before starting.
Permit length and timing
- Residential permits are generally valid for 1 year from issuance.
- New commercial or new single-family home permits are generally valid for 2 years from issuance.
- Do not start work until the permit is issued.
Homeowner vs. contractor rules
Homeowners may perform their own residential work when they own and occupy the single-family residence where the work is being done. If a contractor is doing the work, confirm they can legally pull permits for residential work in Wisconsin and that the permit is issued under the correct party.
How to apply
Start on the City’s Permit Forms page — most homeowners will need the building, electrical, plumbing, or HVAC application, plus zoning forms as needed.

Plan prep & inspections
Fees and planning
Mequon publishes an official fee schedule covering permit- and inspection-related fees — check it before applying so you understand what may apply to your project.
Plan review generally takes about 1–2 weeks after you submit the application and plans.
Scheduling an inspection
- Inspections are scheduled through the City’s central inspection scheduling line.
- Have your permit number or property address ready when you call.
- Inspection requests made after 9:00 AM may be scheduled for the next day, so call early if you’re trying to keep a project moving.
Who to contact
- Central Scheduling (inspections): 262-236-2930
- Permit questions (Inspections Department): 262-236-2924
- Building Inspections Supervisor, Greg Golden: 262-236-2921
- Permit Coordinator, Karen Heil: 262-236-2924
- Inspectors typically answer questions in-office daily, 8:00–9:00 AM and 3:30–4:30 PM.

Seasonal Services and City Notices
Hartland seasonal rules and Village notices can affect parking, snow response, brush and leaf timing, and overall project scheduling. The disclosures below cover the official places to check before planning anything time-sensitive.
Snow operations & winter parking
Snow emergencies
- A snow emergency is declared after a snowfall.
- Plowing starts on snow emergency routes first, then moves to side streets.
- Questions tied to snow emergencies or winter road operations go to the Highway Division.
Street parking rules — critical year-round
Mequon does not allow parking on City streets at any time of year — not just during snow events. This matters most during snow emergencies, so plows can clear routes efficiently. The Police Department can have a vehicle towed if it’s in the way.
Practical winter tips for homeowners
- Keep all vehicles off the street — use driveways or off-street parking only.
- Keep curb areas clear for plows, delivery drivers, and emergency access.
- If you’re planning service work during snow season, coordinate so contractor vehicles aren’t parked in the street.

Road issues, right-of-way trees & city notices
Roadway concerns
For gravel shoulder issues, potholes, road surface concerns, or missing or damaged street signs, contact the Highway Division — they determine jurisdiction and address the issue as appropriate.
Trees in the right-of-way
If you believe a tree issue is in the City right-of-way, contact the City Forester.
Call City Forester 262-674-4080 or email nherlache@cityofmequonwi.gov
After-hours Public Works emergencies
For an after-hours emergency tied to Public Works, call the non-emergency Police Department number. Dispatch is in contact with Public Works and can direct the response as required.
