Garbage, recycling, and yard waste Collection
Hartland's residential garbage and recycling collection is provided by GFL Environmental through the Village program. Use the disclosures below for collection schedules, set-out rules, accepted materials, and yard waste options.
Garbage collection
Garbage is collected weekly on Tuesdays from the Village-issued 96-gallon cart with a black lid. If a holiday falls on a weekday during collection week, service is delayed by one day — confirm using the Village calendar.
Set-out rules
- Carts must be at the street no later than 6:00 AM on collection day.
- Keep all trash inside the cart — extra bags or items left outside the cart will not be collected.
- If a cart is not out at time of service, GFL notes a $25 return service fee.
Cart placement (automated pickup)
- Place the cart within 2 feet of the street.
- Arrows on the lid should point toward the street; handles and wheels face away from the street.
- Leave at least 3 feet of clearance from vehicles, mailboxes, and other obstacles.
- Keep the garbage and recycling carts separated — opposite sides of the driveway when possible.
Bulky item pickup
- Contact GFL Customer Care to schedule — limit one bulky item per week.
- Confirm your address and the item; you'll receive a pickup day and a work order or confirmation number.
- Some items carry extra charges, including Freon-containing appliances and construction debris.
Alternative bulk drop-off
- Residents may bring bulky or additional solid waste to the GFL Transfer Station, 630 E Industrial Drive, Hartland, WI — proof of Village residency is required.
- Contractor and construction debris is limited to one 32-gallon container; box trucks or trailers of construction debris are not accepted under this option.

Recycling collection
Recycling is collected every other week from the Village-provided cart, based on your zone. Use the Village calendar to confirm your correct week. If a holiday falls on a weekday, service is delayed by one day.
Set-out and cart rules
- Carts must be at the street no later than 6:00 AM on collection day.
- Keep materials loose in the cart — do not bag recyclables.
- Don't overfill — the lid should close as much as possible; items outside the cart are not collected.
Cart placement
- Place the cart within 2 feet of the street, arrows on the lid pointing toward the street, handles and wheels facing away.
- Leave at least 3 feet of clearance from mailboxes, parked vehicles, and other obstacles.
- Keep garbage and recycling carts separated, on opposite sides of the driveway when possible.
Accepted materials
- Paper and fiber: newspaper, magazines, books, mail, school or office paper.
- Cardboard: brown corrugated cardboard.
- Paperboard: gray chipboard like cereal and shoe boxes.
- Paper bags: brown paper bags.
- Metal: aluminum cans, clean aluminum foil, tin cans, steel cans, empty aerosol cans.
- Glass: bottles and jars.
- Plastics: #1, #2, and #5 plastics.
- Cartons: milk cartons, juice boxes, soup cartons.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Bagging recyclables.
- Putting food or liquid in containers.
- Packing the cart too tightly so items can't empty cleanly.
- Mixing in non-recyclables, which can contaminate the load.

Yard waste & seasonal pickups
Hartland handles yard waste through a resident drop-off site plus seasonal curbside programs for brush and leaves. Plan cleanups around these windows so piles aren't left uncollected.
Recycling & Yard Waste Drop-Off Site
- Location: 701 Progress Drive, Hartland, WI 53029 (DPW Garage).
- Residents only — a driver's license or ID verifying Village residency is required. No contractors.
- Hours: Fridays (year-round), 9:00 AM–3:00 PM · 2nd & 4th Tuesdays (April–November only), 6:00–8:00 PM · 2nd & 4th Saturdays (April–November only), 9:00 AM–1:00 PM.
- Accepted: grass clippings, leaves, brush (up to 6 in. diameter, 6 ft. length), garden trimmings and plants only.
- Not accepted: landscape timbers or lumber, rocks/sod/gravel/flower pots, stumps or root balls, or any trash mixed with yard waste.
- If yard waste is bagged, take the bags home — don't leave bags at the site.
- Invasive weeds: bag in clear plastic, label “Invasive Plants, Please Landfill,” and set out with regular garbage instead of bringing them to the site.
- Freon-containing items (air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers) are not accepted at the site — contact GFL to arrange curbside pickup; a charge may apply.
- The Village does not accept electronic waste — see Waukesha County's website for disposal options.
Spring Brush Pickup — one pass through the Village
- 2026 schedule: brush collection begins April 13, 2026, one pass only.
- Have brush curbside early in the morning on the scheduled start date.
- Cut brush into 10-foot lengths or less; side branches over 2 in. diameter should be cut off the main branch.
- No branches larger than 6 in. diameter will be accepted.
- Stack into neat piles, not tangled, with cut ends facing the street.
- Not accepted: wire, plastic, metal, lumber, rail ties, stumps, rocks, gravel.
- Grass clippings, leaves, and other yard waste are not picked up during brush pickup — take those to the drop-off site.
Fall Leaf Collection — weather dependent
- 2026 schedule: leaf collection runs October 12 through November 22, 2026, one pass per week as needed.
- Last day to put out leaves to guarantee pickup: November 22, 2026.
- Rake only leaves to the street in neat piles or a continuous tight row, or into the gutter area; keep leaves away from storm inlets.
- Park away from leaf piles so crews can access them.
- Do not bag leaves, and don't mix in brush, garden debris, branches, or animal waste — those will not be collected with leaf piles.

Permits and home improvement guidelines
Inspection Department. If your project involves exterior changes, structural work, or trades like electrical, plumbing, or HVAC, confirm permit requirements early so you don't get delayed by plan review, inspections, or corrections after work starts.
Does my project need a permit?
The Village of Hartland Building Inspection Department administers permits and inspections. Permits are commonly issued by category — building, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and land disturbance — depending on scope.
Common project types that often require permits
- Decks, porches, exterior stairs, railings.
- Additions, remodels, basement finishing, structural changes.
- Sheds, accessory structures, garages.
- Windows and doors when scope impacts openings, structure, or code items.
- Electrical changes: new circuits, service upgrades, hardwired fixtures.
- Plumbing changes: fixture relocations, supply or drain work.
- HVAC installs or replacements when the system scope changes.
- Grading, drainage work, and land disturbance, including erosion control requirements.
- Curb, sidewalk, and driveway replacement work that impacts public areas.
- Right-of-way use, when work affects the street, sidewalk area, or public right-of-way.
New home construction
- For new one- and two-family dwelling construction, the Village directs applicants to the Wisconsin DSPS Electronic Building Permit System.
- The Village still requires plans and data to be submitted for review, and fees must be paid before the permit is considered issued.
Fees and penalties
- Permit fees and plan review requirements vary by project type and valuation.
- Double fees apply when work starts before a permit is issued — confirm before anything begins.

Seasonal Services and City Notices
Hartland seasonal rules and Village notices can affect parking, snow response, brush and leaf timing, and overall project scheduling. The disclosures below cover the official places to check before planning anything time-sensitive.
Snow operations & winter parking
- The Village publishes a dedicated snow and ice page outlining its approach to plowing, snow route priorities, and service expectations during storms.
- If you're scheduling work during snow season, plan for reduced curb access, snowbanks that tighten driveway staging, and slower traffic conditions.
- Winter parking rules can change where vehicles may park overnight, which affects early morning arrivals and service vehicle staging — confirm current rules before a winter appointment, especially if the property relies on street parking.
