Germantown Homeowner Resources
Garbage, recycling, and yard waste Collection
The Village of Germantown contracts Waste Management for residential garbage and recycling collection, and operates its own Residential Yard Waste Facility for brush, leaves, and other yard waste. Use the disclosures below for collection schedules, set-out rules, accepted materials, and contacts.
Garbage collection
The Village contracts Waste Management for residential garbage collection. If you are a business, a private development, or live in an apartment or condominium with 4 or more units, you’ll need to contract your own garbage service directly with a provider.
Find your pickup day
- Germantown uses a collection day map organized by weekday (Monday through Friday) — find your neighborhood on the map to confirm your day.
- For the fastest confirmation, call Waste Management and provide your address; their automated system can tell you your service day before routing you to an agent.
Cart placement rules
- Place the container 3 feet behind the curb.
- Where there is no curb, place the container within 3 feet of the traveled roadway, including areas commonly used for on-street parking.
- Do not block sidewalks, driveways, or bike lanes.
- Leave space between the cart and obstacles such as cars, trees, poles, and other bins so the truck can safely service it.
Set-out time
Not stated on the Village’s garbage collection page. If you need a confirmed set-out deadline for your address, contact Waste Management and ask for the set-out time for Village of Germantown residential service.
Missed pickup or cart issues
For pickup problems or service issues, the Village directs residents to contact Waste Management directly. The Village also publishes step-by-step instructions for reaching WM by phone, chat, or email.
Holiday schedule changes
Garbage collection can shift after certain Village-observed holidays — see “Holiday collection changes” in the Seasonal Services & City Notices section below for the full holiday list and delay rule.

Recycling collection
The Village contracts Waste Management for residential recycling collection and provides one recycling container per residence. Additional or replacement containers are available through Waste Management for a fee. Businesses and private developments need to contract their own recycling service.
Confirm your recycling week
- Recycling is collected every other week, on the same day as your garbage pickup.
- Use the Village recycling calendar to confirm whether your address falls on the “green” or “gold” week for a given date range.
- Waste Management can also confirm your collection day and next recycling week if you provide your address.
Cart placement
- Place the cart with the wheels facing the house.
- Keep the cart at least 3 feet away from parked cars, trees, mailboxes, and other carts.
- In winter, do not place carts on top of snowbanks — keep them accessible and stable for collection.
Accepted in the cart
- Plastic containers, #1–#7 that show the recycling symbol
- Glass containers — clear, brown, and green
- Metal — aluminum cans and clean foil, plus bi-metal cans
- Paper — newspapers, magazines, office paper, paperboard, phone books, hardcover books
- Cardboard — corrugated cardboard and similar paperboard packaging
Prep tips
- Labels don’t need to be removed, but containers should be rinsed clean.
- Place recyclables loose in the cart — do not bag recyclables.
- Keep items empty, free of food and liquid.
Not accepted
- Plastic bags, bagged recyclables, and plastic film
- Food or liquids
- Batteries, flammables, hazardous waste
- Foam cups, foam containers, straws
- Clothing, carpet, furniture
- Yard waste or other green waste
Electronics and appliances
Electronics and appliances should not go in the recycling cart. The Village publishes a dedicated appliance and electronics recycling flyer with accepted items and fee details, including a recycling fee for televisions.
Set-out time
Not stated on the Village’s recycling page, calendar, or brochure. Contact Waste Management for the confirmed set-out time for your route.

Yard waste, brush & the Residential Yard Waste Facility
Curbside brush pickup in Germantown is limited to once a year and does not include leaves or regular yard waste, so the Village’s Residential Yard Waste Facility is the main option for most yard cleanup.
Residential Yard Waste Facility
- Address: W130N10200 Town 9 Parkway, Germantown, WI 53022
- An entry permit is required. It’s free, obtained at the DPW window at Village Hall during business hours, and valid for 2 years. Display it visibly on the lower right passenger-side corner of your windshield.
Hours (seasonal)
- February–March: second Saturday of the month, 8:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
- April–November: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 1:00–7:00 p.m., plus Saturdays, 8:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
- December–January: Saturdays, 8:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
- Closed on all observed holidays.
What the facility accepts
- Yard waste (two designated areas): grass, leaves, garden waste; brush, branches, limbs, and logs, with a 10-foot length limit and 24-inch diameter max.
- Waste oil and antifreeze: in a plastic container with a cap, no larger than 5 gallons; oil filters should be drained of excess oil.
Not accepted
Stumps, treated wood products, and railroad ties. Commercial use of the facility is prohibited.
Annual curbside brush pickup (limited service)
- Offered once per year, in early June.
- Limbs no more than 6 feet long, placed at the curb with the trunk facing the street.
- Brush in containers will not be picked up.
- Yard waste and leaves are not included in this pickup.
- Buckthorn will be picked up.
- The process takes about 2 weeks; the Village will not extend pickup or collect brush set out after it has started.

Permits and home improvement guidelines
Germantown handles permits and inspections through Building Inspection Services. The Village holds DSPS-delegated authority, and SAFEbuilt staff provide permit processing, plan review, and inspections for residents and businesses. Confirm what's required before you buy materials or schedule work to avoid delays.
Does my project need a permit?
Start with the Village’s Residential Permits Required guidance, which covers common homeowner projects like decks, fences, finished basements, garages and sheds, and pools. If you’re unsure, contact Building Inspection Services before purchasing materials or scheduling work.
Most common homeowner permits
- Building permits — structural work, additions, alterations, major remodels
- Electrical permits — new circuits, device additions, service changes, EV chargers, generators, hot tubs, and similar work
- Plumbing permits — fixture replacements, water heaters, sewer or water service work, pumps, and similar work
- HVAC permits — furnace, AC, equipment replacement, ductwork, gas line extensions for heating devices
- Site or property permits — erosion control, driveway permits, and other public works items depending on scope
Do not start work before the permit is issued
The Village’s permit application notes that higher fees may apply if work starts before a permit is obtained.

Plan prep & inspections
How the process typically flows
- Confirm requirements first — check Residential Permits Required and the permit applications list, then call Building Inspection if your scope is unusual or combines multiple trades.
- Submit the correct application — the Village posts individual applications for building, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, driveway, erosion control, and more.
- Plan for inspections — inspections are required before work is concealed and prior to occupancy or use. Have your permit number and address ready when requesting an inspection.
- Budget for more than one fee type — depending on the project, fees can include construction permit fees, plan review, zoning-related fees, occupancy permit fees, erosion control fees, state seal charges, plus separate electrical, plumbing, and HVAC permit fees.

Seasonal Services and City Notices
This section covers time-sensitive Village updates that can affect parking, scheduling, and road access — winter parking rules, snow operations, closures, and holiday-related collection changes. When something feels unclear or is changing quickly, the Alert Center and Notify Me tools are the fastest way to confirm what's currently active.
Snow operations & winter parking
Winter parking rules
- Overnight street parking is regulated year-round under Municipal Ordinance 7.05(5).
- Enforcement runs 2:00–6:00 a.m.
- Overnight parking follows an even day/even side, odd day/odd side rule.
- Parking permits are available through the Germantown Police Department and must be displayed on the dash, visible through the windshield.
Snow emergencies
During significant winter events, the Village may issue a snow emergency notice and restrict parking on Village streets until it’s lifted. Verify current status using the Alert Center before leaving vehicles on the street.
What to expect during plowing
- While plows are still operating, snow may be pushed back into cleared driveway openings — this is normal during active plowing.
- Plows need to clear close to the curb to keep runoff moving toward inlets during melt conditions.
- If timing your shoveling, check snow operations updates and wait until plows have completed your street when possible.
Do not push snow into the street
Village ordinance makes it unlawful to plow, shovel, dump, or place snow onto or across the maintained portion of a public street. Keep snow on your property and out of the roadway when clearing a driveway or sidewalk.
