Garbage collection for one- to four-family residential properties in the Village of Fox Point is provided through the Village’s contracted refuse service. Collection routes are fixed, but pickup time can vary during the day, so residents shouldn’t rely on a specific time.

Set-out rules

• Garbage must be placed curbside by 7:00 AM on your scheduled collection day.
• Late set-outs are a common reason for missed service.
• Collection may begin earlier than usual during high-volume or seasonal periods.

Bagging and container requirements

• All household garbage must be bagged — loose trash may not be collected.
• Garbage must fit inside approved containers; overflowing containers are subject to refusal.
• Materials placed outside of containers are not guaranteed to be collected.

Cart placement

• Place containers at the curb, not in the street.
• Keep containers clear of parked vehicles, mailboxes, and other obstacles.
• Maintain enough clearance for collection equipment to safely access the container.
• Use a consistent placement location each week to avoid missed service.

Large amounts of garbage and special pickups

• Routine weekly garbage volume is limited — garbage exceeding 1 cubic yard (roughly three standard 32-gallon containers) requires a special pickup.
• Special collection must be arranged in advance through Public Works.
• Large cleanouts that aren’t scheduled in advance may be left behind.

What does not belong in regular garbage

Recyclables, yard waste, hazardous materials, electronics, and certain bulky items are not accepted as regular garbage and must follow their own disposal rules.

Holiday delays

When a recognized holiday falls on a weekday, collection is delayed by one day for the remainder of that week. The Village publishes holiday-affected schedules in advance.

Fox Point recycling is collected every week, and your recycling day is the same day as your garbage day. The Village publishes an annual schedule showing normal weeks, leaf-collection weeks, and holiday-shift weeks.

Set-out basics

• Put recycling out curbside the night before or early morning on your collection day.
• Keep materials where the crew can access them safely and consistently each week.
• Don’t block sidewalks, driveways, or storm drains when staging materials for pickup.

Holiday and leaf weeks

• During weeks marked as holiday weeks on the Village schedule, garbage and recycling move to the following day.
• The schedule PDF notes an exception around Thanksgiving week and the following week — follow the printed calendar for those weeks specifically.

Accepted materials

Recycling preparation and eligibility rules are set by the Village Code and Village guidance documents. At a practical level, Fox Point recycling commonly includes:

• Paper and cardboard
• Aluminum, steel, and tin containers
• Glass containers
• Recyclable plastic bottles and containers

Preparation rules that prevent rejected loads

• No plastic bags in recycling — do not bag recyclables.
• Keep containers empty and reasonably clean; liquids and heavy food residue contaminate loads.
• Flatten cardboard so it fits and doesn’t spill into the street.
• Remove and discard caps when required by Village guidance, and keep materials loose in the bin where applicable.

The Village posts the enforceable recycling requirements in the municipal code — that’s the source of truth if there’s ever a question about official rule language.

Fox Point yard waste is collected by Village Public Works staff and runs throughout the year, though preparation rules change by season. Yard waste should be placed roadside in a way that can be collected safely and efficiently.

Year-round prep (outside loose-leaf weeks)

• Place yard waste in sturdy, recyclable paper bags or in containers that can be emptied.
• Bags and containers must be under 50 pounds.
• Yard waste that isn’t properly contained may be left behind.

What's accepted / not accepted

• Typically accepted: green plants, small branches and twigs, thatch.
• Not accepted: grass clippings or turf.

Branches and brush

• Branches under 6 inches in diameter can typically go with normal yard waste collection.
• For set-out, place tree waste with the cut end facing the street, angled for safe pickup.
• Branches 6 inches or larger in diameter, or longer than 4 feet, require a free special yard-waste pickup — call the Village to schedule.
• If a contractor trims or removes a tree, the contractor is expected to remove all debris rather than leaving it for Village pickup.

Loose leaf pickup season (October & November)

• During loose-leaf weeks, leaves do not need to be bagged, but placement rules still apply.
• Place leaf piles above the bottom of the ditch so leaves aren’t washed away by rain.
• Keep piles off the edge of the asphalt pavement so they don’t impede traffic.
• Keep piles at least 5 feet away from sign posts, mailboxes, and fire hydrants.
• Put finger-size-or-larger sticks in a separate pile away from leaves to prevent equipment clogs.
• Larger plant or root material should still be bagged to prevent clogging collection equipment.
• Snow events can affect timing; Village staff make reasonable efforts to collect after snowfall.
• The 2025 schedule listed December 5 as the final day of leaf collection for the season — confirm the current end date on the annual schedule PDF each year.
• Piles placed in the roadway may result in a fine — keep piles staged properly near the roadside.
