Yard waste in Delafield is handled through a combination of a seasonal drop-off site and two citywide brush pickup weeks per year — it is not part of the weekly cart collection.
Brush & yard waste drop-off site

- Brush must be placed out before the first day of the pickup week — crews will not return to neighborhoods for piles set out late.

Permits and home improvement guidelines
Delafield handles permits and inspections through the City's Building Inspector. If your project involves structural changes, floor-plan changes, or trade work like electrical, plumbing, or HVAC, confirm permit requirements before work begins — it's the best way to avoid double fees, rework, or delays.
Does my project need a permit?
The City of Delafield confirms that interior remodeling and projects involving structural changes, floor-plan changes, or trade work like plumbing, HVAC, or electrical typically require a permit. If you're unsure, the City directs residents to contact the Building Inspector before work begins.
Common projects that typically require permits
- Interior remodels involving layout, structural, or major system changes
- Work involving electrical, HVAC, or plumbing trades
- Many exterior improvements where construction is involved
- Swimming pools, including above-ground pools
Choose the right application
Delafield provides separate permit applications for the most common permit types — use the form that matches the work being done: Building Permit Application (general building/remodeling), Electrical Permit, HVAC Permit, or Plumbing Permit.
Quick links
Application prep, fees & planning review
What to have ready before applying
- Job location and owner information
- Contractor information, when applicable
- A clear description of the work and estimated cost
- Supporting plans or specifications when needed — for example, HVAC forms reference residential heating plans and calculations
Rules that can affect cost and timing
- Double fees may apply if work starts before a permit is issued.
- Some permits include an expiration date on the form — don't wait too long to schedule inspections after issuance.
- Trade permit forms include fee schedules and basic information requirements that must be completed before issuance.
Planning & development review
- Some projects may require planning and development review based on scope and property conditions. The City provides a separate planning and development application intake form when additional review is required.
Zoning tools
- Use the Zoning Map and municipal code to confirm zoning district requirements before finalizing project plans.

Right-of-way: street openings & driveway work
Projects that touch the street or public right-of-way require a separate Public Works permit, beyond any building permit.
Street opening / right-of-way work
- Use the Street Opening and Right-of-Way Permit application for driveway, sidewalk, or street work in the city right-of-way.
Keep the right-of-way clear
- Plants, trees, fences, and similar items should not be placed in the public right-of-way.
- The City may remove items placed in the right-of-way at the owner's expense when it needs access for public works activities like mowing, ditch work, clearing, and trimming.

Seasonal Services and City Notices
Seasonal rules and service changes are the things that catch homeowners off guard — winter parking, snow operations, spring road restrictions, and citywide alerts. Use the disclosures below to stay ahead of deadlines and avoid avoidable tickets, fees, or service disruptions.
Snow operations & winter parking
Winter parking rules
- Delafield's winter parking ordinance is in effect November 1 through May 1.
- No parking on any city street or in municipal lots from 2:00 AM to 6:00 AM during that period.
- You can request overnight parking permission through dispatch, but permission will not be granted when snow or ice is forecast within the next 24 hours.
Snow operations and driveway plowing
- The City's municipal code prohibits placing snow or ice from private driveways into the public street or right-of-way.
- If you hire a plowing contractor, make sure they understand this rule — the City can charge the property owner for costs to remove snow or ice improperly deposited in the street.
- Plow windrows across driveway ends are unavoidable, but can be reduced by placing snow strategically at the end of the driveway on the far side, based on the direction the plow approaches.
