Garbage, recycling, and yard waste Collection
Butler's curbside garbage and recycling service is provided by Johns Disposal on an automated cart system, with pickup on Mondays. Yard waste runs through a mix of Village brush and leaf programs plus an optional paid subscription. Use the disclosures below for collection days, cart rules, and contacts.
Garbage collection
Garbage is collected weekly every Monday by Johns Disposal using automated cart pickup. Set your cart out the night before, or by 6:00 AM on collection day.
Which cart is garbage
- The brown cart is garbage; the green cart is recycling. Both lids are labeled.
Cart placement, for the automated arm
- Place carts at the end of your driveway, or in the grass between the sidewalk and the road, next to your driveway.
- Keep carts within 2 feet of the street.
- Keep carts at least 6 feet away from vehicles, mailboxes, poles, or other carts and objects.
Extra bags and overflow
- Extra bags placed next to the cart are not collected — everything must fit inside the cart due to the automated pickup system.
- If you have overflow, hold it for the next pickup or check whether a neighbor has room in their cart.
Bulk and large items
- Bulk items are picked up for a fee — you must schedule directly with Johns Disposal.
If a vehicle blocks your cart
- The driver may move the cart to reach it with the automated arm, but it's best to place your cart where it's least likely to be blocked in the first place.
Snow and winter placement
- If snowbanks block your usual spot, shovel a small area on either side of your driveway in the grass between the curb and street so the cart stays level and accessible.
Missed pickup
- Report a missed collection the same day if possible — contact Village Hall or Johns Disposal.

Recycling collection
Recycling is collected every other Monday by Johns Disposal. Butler uses single-stream recycling, so approved materials can be mixed together in the green cart — no sorting by type required. Set your cart out the night before, or by 7:00 AM on collection day.
Which cart is recycling
- The green tote is recycling — it's labeled on top of the lid.
Confirm your exact recycling weeks
- Johns Disposal publishes the official Butler collection calendar; recycling falls on the shaded weeks.
- Check the calendar around holiday weeks so you don't miss a pickup.
Cart placement and orientation
- Place the cart within 2 feet of the road, with about 6 feet of clearance from vehicles, mailboxes, poles, and other objects.
- Arrows on the lid should point toward the road; handles and wheels should face away from the road.
- Place your garbage cart on one side of the driveway and the recycling cart on the other side.
Accepted curbside
- Paper & cardboard: flattened cardboard, newspaper, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, envelopes, office paper, cereal/cracker boxes, paper grocery bags, pizza boxes (only if free of food or grease), and empty paper milk/juice cartons.
- Plastic: bottles and containers/cups marked #1–#7, including #1 clamshell containers. Not motor oil or gasoline containers.
- Metal: aluminum cans and foil, tin and steel cans, and empty aerosol cans.
- Glass: bottles and jars, empty.
Shredded paper — the one exception to the no-bag rule
- Place shredded paper in a clear or transparent plastic bag and tie it shut — about the size of a basketball.
Not accepted in the recycling cart
- Plastic bags, plastic film, and plastic wrap
- Styrofoam
- Batteries, electronics, propane tanks
- Mirrors, windows, glassware, ceramics
- Food, liquids, diapers, hoses, ropes, clothing
- Construction waste, car parts, or heavy metal items
Need a smaller cart?
- Contact Johns Disposal to request a smaller cart size.

Yard waste & seasonal pickups
Butler handles yard debris through three separate systems: Village brush pickup, Village fall leaf vacuum collection, and an optional paid yard waste subscription through Johns Disposal. Following the set-out rules matters — items prepped incorrectly can be skipped.
1. Brush pickup (Village service, spring – mid-fall)
- Pickup days: the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month, April through mid-October, weather dependent.
- Set-out window: no sooner than 6:00 PM the Sunday before, and at the curb by 7:00 AM on pickup day.
- Placement: stack neatly at the curb, not in the street.
- Size limit: branches no greater than 4 inches in diameter.
- Brush only — no full trees, no containers or bags, and don't mix in other yard waste.
- Piles that don't follow these rules may not be picked up.
2. Leaf collection (Village fall vacuum service, no bags)
- Season: October through the end of November, weather dependent.
- Rake leaves into the street at the curb — DPW vacuums them up periodically. There's no fixed route calendar, but collection generally happens within about a week.
- Do not bag leaves — bagged leaves will not be vacuumed up.
- Don't hide brush under the leaf pile.
3. Yard waste subscription (optional, paid — not a Village program)
- Butler does not provide weekly yard waste collection. For weekly pickup, Johns Disposal offers a paid subscription.
- Season: April 1 through November 31.
- Weekly limit: up to 2 bags or containers per week, per home.
- Set materials out the night before, or by 7:00 AM on collection day.
- Contact Johns Disposal to enroll and confirm pricing.
Christmas trees
- Place trees at the curb; do not bag them.
- DPW collects trees during the first and third weeks of January each year.

Permits and home improvement guidelines
Butler's building inspection services are handled through SAFEbuilt on behalf of the Village, which provides permit forms, fee schedules, and inspection scheduling details on its official pages. If your project involves structural changes, exterior work, or trades like electrical, plumbing, or HVAC, confirm permit requirements early — it's the best way to avoid rework, plan-review delays, or inspection rescheduling.
Does my project need a permit?
Butler posts permit and application forms in its Document Center under “Building Department Permits and Applications.” The Village uses the Uniform Permit Application for Building, HVAC, Electrical, and Plumbing permits. Check the Village Fee Schedule to confirm current permit fees, minimum fees, and possible re-inspection fees before you submit.
Online permitting, what Butler requires
- Butler is transitioning to online permitting and payment through Community Core.
- You must register as a user before you can submit online.
- Everyone must complete, sign, date, and upload a copy of the paper application to the online portal.
- Contractors should ensure their contractor license number is current in the submission.
Common permit types
- Building — additions, alterations, accessory buildings
- Fences, decks, sheds
- Roofing, siding
- Electrical, plumbing, HVAC
- Conditional use permits, when applicable

Seasonal Services and City Notices
Butler's service schedules and parking rules can shift seasonally — especially during winter weather, leaf season, and holiday weeks. Use the disclosures below to confirm current parking restrictions, closures, and notices before scheduling deliveries, dumpster drop-offs, or other street-dependent work.
Snow operations & winter parking
- No overnight street or municipal lot parking between 3:00 AM and 6:00 AM, enforced by the Butler Police Department. Request an exception through the Village's overnight parking request process.
- Butler enforces alternate-side parking — it's especially important to follow during winter months so plows and emergency vehicles can get through.
- When a snow emergency is declared, parking rules can tighten quickly — check official updates before leaving vehicles on the street overnight.

Road closures, construction & city notices
- Community events, parades, and public works activity can affect street access, parking availability, and delivery timing.
- If your project involves deliveries, street parking, or trailer placement, check the Village calendar close to your target date.
- Holiday weeks can also affect public works timing and vendor schedules — confirm restrictions and closures a few days ahead for anything time-sensitive, like a move, dumpster delivery, or contractor staging.

Holiday collection changes & seasonal notices
- Holiday weeks can impact collection timing and public works schedules — the Village posts updates through News, the Calendar, and Newsletters.
- Christmas trees: place at the curb, don't bag them. DPW collects trees during the first and third weeks of January.
- Leaf season and brush season bring the most temporary curbside changes — confirm current seasonal guidance before setting materials out early.
